Glamping: The Most Comfortable Form of Camping

What is Glamping?

Glamping is a term that has been gaining popularity recently as a novel concept in vacation experience. Merriam-Webster defines the word as "outdoor camping with amenities and comforts (such as beds, electricity, and access to indoor plumbing) not usually used when camping". Originally coined back in 2005, the word is a portmanteau of glamorous and camping.

Over the years, glamping has turned into a vacation concept where each glamping destination around the globe offers its own, unique experience. If you are tired of ordinary vacation packages, you can enjoy the great outdoors away from crowds, without having to sacrifice home comforts.

When did Glamping Become Popular??

The word "glamping" first appeared in the United Kingdom in 2005 and was added to the Oxford English Dictionary in 2016. The word may be a new, but the concept of glamping goes back way farther. For instance, in the 16th century, the Scottish Earl of Atholl pitched luxurious tents filled with provisions from his palace to accommodate the visiting King James V and his mother.

Probably the most extravagant example of palatial tent-living in history was the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a diplomatic summit in 1520 between Henry VIII of England and Francis I of France in northern France. According to historians, 2,800 tents were set up for the guests, who appeared in their finest garb to partake in the spectacle, which included numerous events and contests from wrestling to archery.

At around the same time, the Ottomans had ostentatious, highly ornate tents transported from one military mission to the next.

After the end of the era of great empires, luxurious tents made an appearance once more in the 1920s as African safari became a popular adventure of choice for wealthy American and British travelers.

2As nature retreats and camping grew became more and more popular from the second half of the 20th century onwards, the demand for affordable luxury and concepts such as "wellness and mindfulness", which denote an increased attention individuals pay to their physical and mental well-being, brought with them a search for sustainable and comfortable camping.

Today, glamping has introduced the culture of camping to a broader audience of middle-aged people and the elderly alongside young people, by offering a comfortable and luxurious camping experience in a variety of settings from tents to cabins, and RVs to tree houses.

What Is a Glamping Tent?

A glamping tent is a special form of camping tent designed for a more comfortable camping experience with various amenities such as a bed, toilet and seats. In time, the glamping movement grew to include tree houses, geodesic domes and recreational vehicles that blend in with their natural surroundings.

How Does One Go Glamping?

As glamping tents are bulky and feature luxury items like bed, down comforters, carpeting, seating and other accessories, it may be difficult to set up the tent by yourself or to find the right camping site. For that reason, the ideal solution is glamping facilities, boutique campsites that are growing in popularity in Turkey and the world.

It is a good idea to look up the features of the camping site, the services and activities offered and the nature sports available in the area to ensure that your holiday meets your expectations. By doing so, you can pack only the essentials, and enjoy a simple and comfortable vacation that fits the spirit of glamping. All you need to do is to enjoy nature in tranquility.

Differences Between Glamping and Camping

  • Camping involves spending carrying your own tent and pitching it in a remote location to experience nature in its purest form. Glamping offers a more sheltered and luxury camping experience inside nature with amenities like bed, electricity and fridge.
  • For camping, you need to bring your own tent, sleeping bags, cookware and other gear. Glamping offers not only a comfortable bed, but also every facility and home comfort you might require
  • As a camper, you will more likely sleep in a sleeping bed or an air mattress, while glampers will have comfortable beds with clean sheets.
  • Unless you camp in a campsite, you will have to use Mother Nature herself for your toilet and shower needs. Glamping destinations have restrooms and showers either inside the tent, or in separate facilities.
  • Camping offers little more than a shelter inside the nature, while glamping offers the amenities you require for your physical and mental wellbeing.

Advantages of Glamping

  • Unlike large-scale hospitality facilities like hotels and holiday resorts, glamping tents, bungalows or other accommodation options are eco-friendly and easily removable independent units.
  • Glamping sites are almost always at the heart of the nature, offering the amazing beauty of the great outdoors alongside the amenities of a luxury boutique hotel.
  • Glamping allows you to enjoy the nature in the comfort of your home.
  • There is a wide variety of accommodation options that cater for every glamper, including tents, eco-huts, cabins, bungalows, geodesic domes and recreational vehicles.
  • Depending on your glamping site, you will get to participate in a wide selection of outdoor sports.
  • You will have a chance to experience the most attractive natural environments in Turkey and the world without compromise on comfort.
  • While traditional camping is fun, it can be challenging for newcomers. Glamping allows you to avoid the difficulties associated with camping.
